Co-managing a cancer survivor requires a clearly-defined medical plan and collaboration from all team members. Today's webinar, from 2–3 PM EDT, will focus on the role diet and nutritional factors play in influencing both the quality and duration of life after the diagnosis of cancer. As a medical professional, one may see a client for other issues or diagnoses, but the patient has had cancer in the past. Evidence exists that lifestyle factors, such as diet, physical activity, and emotional support can make a difference in improving quality of life and ameliorating symptoms for a cancer survivor.

It is important as a dietitian to understand the short and long-term side effects that may still be present with your client throughout the cancer continuum. For instance, choosing what to eat often causes anxiety and confusion for a cancer survivor. Medical professionals can play a key role as well, in helping educate the client on the best nutrition plan for surviving and thriving.

Once the medical plan is determined, how do you implement the nutrition component? Dietitian Shayna Komar will work in collaboration with Chef Nancy Waldeck to show how a partnership made up of different healthcare professionals can work to make a positive impact for a cancer survivor. The dietitians’ role may include developing a patient care plan that is not confusing with all different diets. The chef’s role may include taking the nutrition advice from the dietitian to develop a menu, create recipes, and provide information on purchasing and preparation. Overall, nutrition can play a positive role for a thriving survivor if it is done well.
